Location: Johnston Road (from Ewing Street / Grandpark Circle to Blohm Drive)
Project Type: Neighbourhood Traffic Calming
Developer/Lead Agency: City of Ottawa
Project Overview: The City of Ottawa has completed a traffic calming study along Johnston Road in response to ongoing concerns from residents regarding speeding, safety, and overall road use. The study’s goal is to introduce permanent roadway modifications that improve safety for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit, and emergency vehicles, primarily by reducing vehicle speeds.
Current Status:
Phase: Final Recommendations Completed / Approvals Pending
Progress Update:
The project webpage has been updated to include the final recommended traffic calming plan and supporting documentation. The next step is to obtain final project approvals, after which the detailed design phase will begin.
Proposed Modifications Include:
- Three (3) sets of speed cushions from Ewing Street/Grandpark Circle to Baslaw Drive (West).
- Continuous painted reserved cycling lanes from Ewing Street/Grandpark Circle to Baslaw Drive (West), delineated with pavement markings and roadside regulatory signage.
- Cycling lanes require the street to be signed No Stopping. As a result, the on-street parking along this section of Johnston Road will be removed.
- Edge lines from Baslaw Drive (West) to Blohm Drive.
- Intersection of Johnston Road and Ewing Street/Grandpark Circle:
- Addition of a crosswalk (East leg)
- Addition of a pedestrian landing pad (North/East corner)
- Renewal of the existing pedestrian landing pads to meet current accessibility standards
- Bus pad extension
- Intersection of Johnston Road and Blohm Drive:
Addition of painted ladder markings on the East leg to highlight/clarify the pedestrian crossing
