Winter Weather is Coming: Here is How We’re Preparing

Nov 22, 2024 | News Updates

The colder weather is upon us and with that comes snow! While we may not be mentally prepared to embrace the colder weather, our Winter Operations Team at the city is ready to mobilize.
Earlier this month, I hosted my annual Snow Tour and met with residents from across the community to proactively address winter maintenance and snow clearing concerns. I was joined by our local supervisors from Public Works, Chad Findlay, James Kibbee, and Dave Kelly. Together we reviewed problem areas in the ward and discussed ways to improve snow clearing in our community.
The Snow Tour was a success and in addition to addressing local concerns, we were also successful at advocating to add the clearing of a new pedestrian connection to the ward. As of this year, the bridge located between the Towngate Shopping Plaza and the Carousel Condos and Homestead Apartments will be winter maintained. This will ensure that residents have year-round access to this popular shopping center.
As we head deeper into November, city staff will continue to remove traffic calming flex stakes and bicycle bollards. Parks Maintenance staff are closing and winterizing spray pads, wading pools, park fountains, decorative fountains and irrigation systems. Seasonal docks, tennis, volleyball, and safety netting are being removed. Integrated Turf Management for sports fields, ball diamonds and outdoor courts took place through the fall, in preparation for next spring.
Throughout winter, Parks Maintenance services outdoor rinks by:
• installing temporary rink boards, hockey nets, and netting;
• flooding outdoor rinks with no on-site water source;
• supporting community-run rinks by providing emergency access; and
• by responding to requests for repairs.
