Tapiola Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Project

Mar 18, 2026 | Active Transportation, Transportation

Location: Tapiola Crescent (from Johnston Road East to Johnston Road West)

Project Type: Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Study

Developer/Lead Agency: City of Ottawa

Project Overview

The City of Ottawa completed a traffic calming study along Tapiola Crescent in response to long‑standing traffic and safety concerns raised by residents. The purpose of the study was to identify and recommend permanent roadway modifications aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and improving safety for all road users.

Current Status

Phase: Early Study and Concept Design

Progress Update:
City staff are currently completing the Project Charter, gathering survey data, and retaining a design consultant to advance the detailed design phase. A conceptual traffic calming plan has already been drafted based on preliminary findings.

Proposed Modifications Include:

Pedestrian Crossovers (PXOs) with Bulb‑Outs

Three new PXOs, each with curb narrowings to reduce crossing distances, are proposed at:

  1. Between Johnston Road West and Gentle Gate Crescent
  2. Between White Clover Private and Rastila Crescent / Tammela Court
  3. Between Brando Crescent / Rushford Private and Haxby Private

Concrete Center Medians

Two raised medians are proposed to narrow vehicle lanes and calm traffic:

  • Between Fireside Crescent and Crimson Gate
  • Between Rastila Crescent / Wingale Private and Brando Crescent / Somero Private

Note: Due to roadway width limitations, sections of on‑street parking near these medians would need to be removed.
