National Indigenous History Month 2024

Jun 17, 2024 | Community Events, News Updates

June is National Indigenous History Month, a period dedicated to honouring and learning about the unique cultures, experiences, and achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. This celebration includes National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st, aligned with the summer solstice, which is culturally and spiritually significant for many Indigenous communities.

Despite historic and ongoing colonial practices, Indigenous Peoples globally have continually exercised their inherent right to self-determination as sovereign nations. It is essential to recognize the Anishinabe Algonquin Host Nation, as Ottawa is built on their traditional and unceded territory. The Anishinabe Algonquin Host Nation has shaped this region since time immemorial and continues to contribute significantly to its betterment.

Firsthand experiences are often the best learning opportunities. We encourage you to check out the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival – a local event celebrating National Indigenous History Month, taking place from June 21st-June23rd at Madahoki Farm 4420 W Hunt Club Road Nepean, ON K2R 1E7. This vibrant festival will feature over 40 Indigenous artisans, crafters, and food vendors. From beautiful artwork to delicious treats, there’s something to delight every visitor!
