National Indigenous History Month

Jun 29, 2025 | News Updates

As National Indigenous History Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this time—and to acknowledge that National Indigenous Peoples Day was recognized this past Saturday, June 21.
This month serves as an opportunity to honour the history, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and to reflect on the deep-rooted impacts of colonialism that continue to affect Indigenous communities today.
As the City of Ottawa’s Council Liaison for the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation Civic Cultural Protocol and Implementation Plan, I remain committed to advocating for respectful relationships and meaningful action in support of reconciliation—not just in June, but throughout the year.
Reconciliation requires more than recognition; it calls for ongoing education, listening, and sustained efforts to address systemic inequities and uphold Indigenous rights.
Let’s continue this work together, today and every day.
