Important Community Development: Violence Against Women Housing Application

Jun 4, 2025 | News Updates

Dear Residents,

I want to bring to your attention an important development application that has been submitted to our city. The Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition (OAC) has formally submitted a Site Plan Control application for a critically needed residential care facility that will serve Inuit women and children fleeing violence.

The proposed facility will be a two-and-a-half-storey building with 13 units, providing 30 transitional housing beds specifically designed to support Inuit women and children in crisis. This facility represents a vital step forward in addressing the ongoing crisis of violence against Indigenous women and girls in our community.

As the Councillor for Gloucester-Southgate ward, I recognize the urgent need for culturally appropriate, safe housing options for Indigenous women and children escaping domestic violence. The OAC has been doing important healing work in our community, especially around Inuit VAW housing initiatives OAC Red Dress Day 2025 – Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition, and this application represents a concrete step toward addressing these critical needs.
