Engagement Opportunity: Solid Waste Master Plan Series 3

Feb 14, 2024 | Community Events

The safe, efficient, and sustainable management of our solid waste directly affects the health and cleanliness of our entire community. With Ottawa’s population continuing to increase, the amount of waste the City will need to manage is forecasted to increase by 31% over the next three decades. The City’s owned and operated Trail Waste Facility Landfill (TWFL) is estimated to be full between 2034 and 2035. This will not meet our long-term disposal needs if immediate changes are not made.

The City of Ottawa has developed a new Solid Waste Master Plan that aims to decrease the amount of waste to manage, divert as much waste as possible from the landfill, recover maximum resources and energy from the remaining garbage and dispose of residual waste in an environmentally sustainable way. This means there will be changes that impact your household, including recycling, garbage, waste collection containers, curb side pickup, and more.

The project is now conducting their Engagement Series 3, which will be the last opportunity for you to have your say on this plan before it is finalized. The in-person consultation session that is intended to capture residents of Gloucester-Southgate will be tomorrow, February 15th at the Nepean Sportsplex from 7PM-9PM. For those who are unable to attend on February 15th, there are other in person and virtual engagement opportunities to provide your feedback on this topic. Should you wish to submit your feedback via online survey, you may do so here: ottawa.ca/wasteplan

If you are able to participate, I highly recommend you consider this opportunity to provide your thoughts on this important City-wide project.
