City Council Moves to Secure Future Waste Capacity

Jan 16, 2026 | News Updates

Earlier this week, City Council approved next steps to purchase the Capital Region Resource Recovery Centre (CRRRC), the first provincially approved landfill in over 20 years. The site will operate as a landfill regardless of ownership and has an expected lifespan of 30 years.

Purchasing the CRRRC would give the City control over its development, secure long-term landfill capacity as the population grows, and include all provincial approvals—avoiding years of regulatory work. The site will not be used immediately and future decisions will include public input.

Council authorized staff to finalize a purchase agreement. Cost details will be shared publicly once the acquisition is complete, expected by the end of Q1 2026. This decision does not determine how or when the site will be used and does not rule out other future waste management solutions.
