As mentioned in my last newsletter, Black History Month is a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate the profound contributions of Black communities to our city, province, and country. Yesterday morning, I attended a special Black History month celebration breakfast before our 10am Council meeting – this was an amazing opportunity to recognize and connect with members of Ottawa’s Black communities.
I was thrilled to invite Amoune Omer, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Somali Hope Foundation, and her husband Mahamud Elmi, Co-Founder of the Somali Hope Foundation and Justice of the Peace, to be my guests and highlight the incredible work they are doing in the community.
Thank you to Councillor King for organizing this wonderful event.
As a reminder, throughout February, there are many opportunities to learn, connect, and take part in events celebrating Black history and culture here in Ottawa. Residents are encouraged to explore Black History Ottawa’s event calendar for a full list of activities happening across the city this month: https://blackhistoryottawa.org/black-history-month-2026/
Let’s take this time to reflect, learn, and celebrate the many contributions that continue to strengthen our community.
