Dearborn Private & Lester Road Intersection Modification

Mar 24, 2026 | Transportation

Location: Dearborn Private & Lester Road Intersection

Project Type: Intersection Modification – 99% Detailed Design (Safety & Operations Improvements)

Developer/Lead Agency: City of Ottawa (Transportation Planning & Design)

Project Overview

The City of Ottawa has completed the 99% Detailed Design for roadway modifications at the intersection of Dearborn Private and Lester Road. These improvements aim to address ongoing safety concerns and discourage prohibited left‑turn movements that have persisted despite previous interventions.

The project responds directly to long‑standing community concerns regarding illegal left turns from Dearborn Private onto Lester Road, movements that were occurring frequently even after the installation of a triangular median, “No Left Turn” signage, and targeted police enforcement. Following advocacy efforts and collaboration with City staff, a more permanent roadway redesign solution is now moving forward.

Key Elements of the Proposed Roadway Modifications

  • Roadway widening to support a revised angled entry alignment for vehicles travelling southbound toward Lester Road
  • Installation of a new central island splitter to prevent prohibited turning movements
  • Bicycle channel incorporated into the island splitter, ensuring continuous and safe cycling connectivity
  • Curb reconstruction to accommodate the new island geometry and roadway realignment
  • Updated pavement markings and signage to improve clarity and safety for all road users

These design changes are intended to enhance compliance, improve traffic operations, and promote safer conditions for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
