As mentioned a few months ago, Emerald woods and Wyman Crescent have been listed as two of the top priority sites for the next phase of the NCC’s clean up from the Derecho storm.
The phase one emergency clean-up that took place immediately after the Derecho focused on clearing trails and pathways that would reduce risks to public safety.
Now, in phase 2, the NCC will be doing post-derecho clean up and long-term recovery. This will include the removal of debris accumulated from the emergency response.
This is a very extensive undertaking across the city. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to remedy the damage that the derecho left behind. It will take years, and possibly decades, for the forest to recover. Field assessments continue to be conducted and forest recovery and enhancement plans will be prepared to guide the recovery process. This includes a multi-year planting program starting in 2024 in areas most impacted by the derecho.
The work is planned to start at the end of August or early September 2024 after the migratory bird window. The 3 first sites are:
Pinhey Forest
Autumnwood (Emerald Woods); and,
Wyman Crescent.
Clean-up of other sites in the city will roll out in 2024/25 .
Once the contract has been awarded, we will have a better idea of the exact timing, and will update accordingly.
